The Northern Lights (or aurora borealis) are a spectacle of nature's silent firework display. The dancing aurora are truly one of the unique wonders of the world. Iceland is a leading northern light destination perfectly situated at the edge of the arctic circle, perfect for spotting the northern lights. The countries breathtaking nature and landscape make a sighting of the phenomenon even more excessive and powerful.

Our Northern Lights team works hard throughout the day, checking on weather data in order to best predict a location where the lights should be clearly visible. The locations visited are different from day to day we head in the direction with the most chances of seeing Northern Lights. As this tour is weather dependent and sightings are not guaranteed you are welcome to join another Northern Lights tour free of charge.

Our small group version of the Northern Lights hunt offers an intimate experience with a small group of people (18 max) and one of our enthusiastic expert guides. Northern Lights Hunting

The Aurora Borealis, known commonly as the Northern Lights, is a naturally occuring light display that is commonly seen in high latitude locations. These ethereal lights are formed when solar winds agitate the magnetic field of the earth, Ionising the particles and causing them to give off light which we see in the form of the wispy bands of colour across the night sky. The auroras can form in a variety of colours depending on the altitude of the particles when they become ionised.

Reykjavik has high level of light pollution, making it difficult for good viewings of the aurora. To overcome this obstacle we go out into the darker countryside to hunt for the lights. With little help from our northern lights expert team, Your experienced guides will help you dive into the world of the northern lights and feed you with interesting information and facts about the phenomenon. With a little bit of luck you will find an amazing spot to view the Aurora borealis. With a maximum group size of 18, you can be assured of a much more intimate experience that is more flexible and spontaneous. When you reach the location that your guide has selected as being the best point for a sighting that night, you will have time to get out observe and explore. You will have plenty of time to take some photographs and you can count on assistance from your guide setting up your camera.

Variating between evenings your team might stay at the same place for the whole tour or it might move around in order to get you the best experience possible. You can count on the Bustravel team doing everything within their power to make the night outstanding for you.

Hot chocolate and refreshments

The northern lights are wild and unpredictable so hunting the lights requires a lot of patience and warm gear. Our team offer a special recipe of hot chocolate along with light refreshments to keep you warm but please make sure you are also well equipped for staying out side during Icelandic winter nights.

In case of no lights

It is a unique opportunity in life to witness a natural phenomenon such as the Northern Lights and no display of the Northern Lights is ever the same. The scientology behind the aurora require many factors to work together in order for us to see it; low temperatures, minimal cloud cover and low light pollution. Even though Iceland offers ideal conditions for the lights, they can never be guaranteed.

If you are unfortunate enough to miss out on them on our tour, we offer you to rebook on to another evening. Details of how to rebook in case of no lights will be supplied by the guide. The offer for rebooking is valid for three years from the date of your tour departure.

At the end of the night, we'll bring you back to Reykjavik and you will be dropped off at your preferred location.

Please note that the duration of the tour is normally 3-4 hours but can vary in length depending on weather conditions on the evening.
